Admission to the Master Materials Science

Information about the admission process to the master program Materials Science.

Dear Students,

the transition from the bachelor to the master study course, is regulated by the admission regulation (in German).

As a consecutive program the Master Courses in Material Science require an approriate Bachelor degree (minimum duration of 6 semester). Beside the dedicated material topics (e.g. physical metallurgy, crystallography, materials chemistry, mechanisms of mechanical strength, polymeric materials, ceramics), a qualifying bachelor program must have a strong record in natural science and mathematics. You must demonstrate a sound introduction to solid state and organic chemistry as well as quantum and solid state physics. As a rule, a classical program in Mechanical Engineering or Mechantronics does not represent a sufficient preparation, except with an extraordinary focus on materials.

Admission Process

The admission regulation governs the admission process, in which points will be awarded to the master applicants. Totally 100 points can be obtained in the process. For a direct admission 81 points are necessary. Between 65 and 80 points in the applicants have a chance via an interview to be accepted in the Master Course.

The total amount of points in the admission process is composed of two parts:

  1. For each tenth part of a mark (obtained in the Bachelor Course) better than 3.0 (German evaluation system) the applicant will be awarted 1 point (maximum 20 points with the mark 1.0; 1 point with the mark 2.9). Marks attained at universities abroad will be converted into German marks.

  2. The degree of compatibility of the Bachelor of the applicant with the Bachelor Materials Science in Stuttgart is judged. At most 80 points are given for fully compatible Bachelor degrees.

Language requirement

Because the Master Materials Science is offered in English language, the applicants have to approve a certain minimum fluency. In the admission regulation the minimum fluency is defined as follows:

TOEFL PBT:575 points; TOEFL CBT 225 points; TOEFL iBT 90 points; IELTS minimum band 6.5; Cambridge ESOL CAE/CPE.

For alumni of an English taught Bachelor a confirmation of the University concerned, that the language used was English, is sufficient.
